Blueberries: when they're ripe, storage and recipes
A blueberry turns blue a few days before it turns sweet. Patience pays off.
π Season: Mid-June to August, depending on the variety and region.
How to tell it's ripe
- The whole berry is deep blue with a waxy grey bloom and no reddish ring by the stem.
- A ripe berry drops into your palm when you rub the cluster gently with your thumb.
- The same bush has unripe ones too β only take those that come away by themselves.
How to pick
- Hold the container under the cluster and roll the berries into it with your thumb.
- Don't rub hard β the waxy bloom protects them and helps them keep.
- In hot weather pick early or late and keep your harvest in the shade.
Storage
- Unwashed in the fridge they keep 1β2 weeks; wash just before eating.
- They freeze very well: spread dry on a tray, freeze, then bag.
